ABOUT US

The African Parliamentarians Association for Human Rights (AfriPAHR) is an independent, non-partisan network of parliamentarians from the African continent that works to advance democracy, freedom of religion or belief and human rights to build a fairer and inclusive Africa, through diplomacy and fostering strategic alliances between nations.

Founded in 2017, AfriPAHR is led by Honourable Nqabayomzi Kwankwa (MP South Africa), Chair of AfriPAHR Steering Committee and group of 13 Steering Committee members from across Africa. All parliamentarians participate in AfriPAHR as individuals and not as representatives of political or government bodies or any other organization.

OUR OBJECTIVES

To advocate and promote democracy, good governance and human rights in Africa.

To advocate for and promote the right to freedom of religion or belief for all persons in Africa.

To network with like-minded continental and international organizations in advancing fundamental principles of democracy and human rights.

To undertake joint efforts to lobby and promote democracy, human rights and the right to freedom of religion or belief in Africa through missions, information sharing and by mobilising African parliamentarians and legislations.

WHY WE EXIST

Against the backdrop of growing concerns for violations of human rights, the AfriPAHR became a reality based on the notion that a regional network of like-minded parliamentarians and other relevant stakeholders was needed to address the weaknesses of the current institutional frameworks in the continent.

With a vision to promote, nurture and strengthen democracy and human rights, especially the right to freedom of religion or belief in Africa, AfriPAHR’s work is underpinned by the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063, the AU’s African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as well as the AU Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

We are a network of, independent, nonpartisan African parliamentarians who are committed to the promotion of democracy, good governance and human rights, in particular the right to freedom of religion or belief in Africa.
